What does Foxxjazell, Shorty Roc, Last Offense, and Nano Reyes have in common? A new music on Bossip.com. Foxxjazell is making headlines beyond the LGBT community with her new remix video, “Ride Or Die Boy” featuring hip-hop artist, Shorty Roc, Last Offense and Nano Reyes. Bossip meaning Black gossip, a predominantly “straight” viewership blog site is “the premier destination for African-American popular culture and entertainment, with a voice that’s edgy, viciously hilarious, politically aware-and completely unique. Aside from Bossip being as part of the Top Ten Blogger’s Roll: Yahoo! 2009 Year in Review and voted as the Best Hip-Hop Blog in 2008 by VH1 Hip-Hop Honors the blog site is also recognize in the New York Daily News, Time Magazine, Newsweek, Entertainment Weekly, LA Times, New York Times, Boston Globe, USA Today, Washington Post, VH1, TMZ, and more.”
Bossip staff writer posted the controversial “Ride or Die Boy” music video May 7, 2010 and literally, the video hits shot up from 200 views to over 7,500 views in less then 24 hours. Most of the comments were negative reactions to two dudes kissing each other. However, gay friendly and the LGBT community manage to keep up with the homophobic comments with positive support. The video appeared to be “normal” until the end when all of the male rappers kissed their male love interest in the music video. The kiss seems to be very sensual and pleasing. It was one of the most “real” kisses seen in a long time in a video. Remember the Michael Jackson Kiss with then wife, Lisa Precisely? How about the entire “I want to be a lesbian for a moment kiss” on some of the award shows? Well, you be the judge… view the video.
In the end, we all can agree that Hip-Hop as we know it will never be the same thanks to one bold person on bossip.com that had enough guts to post the video. Some say Bossip.com was making fun of the video. To describe the video they wrote,” The Gayest Video ever.” Well, one can argue that point. However from the heterosexual perspective in their eyes especially based on the comments, it is the “gayest” video they probably every seen. However, if Bossip.com were making fun of the video, wouldn’t it make sense to post it in the “Crazy Video” Section of their blog? The video was actually post it in the “Music Video” Section. Secondly, take a look at the tags, there is nothing homophobic in the tags: Gay, Gayest Video Ever, Music Videos, Video. Again, you be the judge.
Handclap goes to Bossip.com for posting the “Ride or Die boy” music video regardless if people comments were negative or positive. One can focus on the negative comments or one can see this as a platform to discuss homophobia in hip-hop and celebrate diversity. I look forward to seeing more hip-hop sites taking risk and posting video that reflect true life. The fact is, gay people, people who love the same gender has been around long before we all were thought of so deal with that truth.
